Review: Angel- L.A. Weatherly + INTERNATIONAL GIVEAWAY OF SIGNED COPY

Willow knows she's different from other girls. And not just because she loves tinkering around with cars. Willow has a gift. She can look into people's futures, know their dreams, their hopes and their regrets, just by touching them. She has no idea where she gets this power from - But Alex does. Gorgeous, mysterious Alex knows Willow's secret and is on a mission to stop her. The dark forces within Willow make her dangerous - and irresistible. In spite of himself, Alex finds he is falling in love with his sworn enemy.

I picked up Angel a few months ago after I heard through twitter about events in London organized by Girls Without a Bookshelf. ‘Huh,’ I thought to myself. ‘They must really like this book in order to be organizing an event for it. I should check this out.’

So I did. And guess what? I liked it too!

L.A. Weatherly has created a whole new spin on angels- forget the kind, gentle heavenly hosts of Christmas ornaments and Bible stories, these angels are creatures from another dimension who are parasitic on the human race. And they were creepy! Far eastern elements such as chakras are also brought into the mix, making for a wholly unique take on the angelic trend.

Willow’s not your usual teenage girl. For starters, she likes fixing cars, but she’s also psychic. Although she doesn’t have the ideal home environment (her mother is disabled, her father is absent and her aunt isn’t very sympathetic) her life is otherwise quite content—until she does a psychic reading for a classmate and gets caught up in the murky business of the Church of Angels. Soon she’s on the run with an assassin who’s just tried to kill her but is now the only person she can rely on.

I don’t know what it is with bad boys named Alex in YA fiction these days, but Angel features another one! This Alex is part of an elite force of angel-killers who’s now doing his missions solo due to some heartbreaking complications in his past.

Then there’s a road trip! Those of you who have read my review for Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour will remember that I’m now obsessed with road trips, so to see one pop up in Angel put a smile on my face. Their budding romance was also sweet, if not as drawn out as I would have liked, and it was clear that by the end they had really started to depend on each other. The ending was explosive (literally) and I’m anxious for book 2, Angel Fire!

Now to business—L.A. Weatherly visited my school to give a talk to our creative writing club in early December, which we all very much enjoyed. She was not only an incredibly nice person but also very encouraging to all our writers, myself included.

Plus: she was kind enough to sign both my personal copy of Angel and also an extra copy for you guys!

  3. Hi,
Found your link thru YA Addict. Angel sounds very intriguing *scratches chin*. I'm digging the cover too; the model on there definitely doesn't appear too angelic though so I guess that's fitting.

    It's pretty awesome that you're giving away a copy. I think I'll enter :)

Now I'm off to poke around here some more.
