In My Mailbox #12

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren

Late post this week, as I didn't have internet over the weekend.

It was my birthday on Saturday, so I got some great hard copies!

Candor by Pam Bachorz

The picture-perfect new town of Candor, Florida, is attracting more and more new families, drawn by its postcard-like small-town feel, with white picket fences, spanking-new but old-fashioned-looking homes, and neighborliness. But the parents are drawn by something else as well.  They know that in Candor their obstreperous teenagers will somehow become rewired - they'll learn to respect their elders, to do their chores, and enjoy their homework.  They'll give up the tattoos, metal music, and partying that have been driving their parents crazy.  They'll become every parent's dream.

I've wanted to read Candor for a very long time- it's been recommended to me by many fellow bloggers and offline friends, such as Patty from Yay Reads! The premise sounds incredibly creepy, and I'm excited to see how it'll be handled.

13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

When Ginny receives thirteen little blue envelopes and instructions to buy a plane ticket to London, she knows something exciting is going to happen. What Ginny doesn't know is that she will have the adventure of her life and it will change her in more ways than one. Life and love are waiting for her across the Atlantic, and the thirteen little blue envelopes are the key to finding them in this funny, romantic, heartbreaking novel.

This is my first Maureen Johnson book, and I have to admit that I snuck a few pages before I went to sleep on my birthday- loving it already. You probably all know that Anna and the French Kiss was my favorite book of 2010. You might not know that John Green described Anna as what would have resulted if he and Maureen Johnson had a french baby. I love John Green, and I loved Anna, thus, I'm pretty sure I'm going to love this book. :)

I didn't get to take a picture, but one of my close friends (who is a computer genius and designed this awesome 'Do the Write Thing' t-shirt) got me a beautiful old leather bound copy of A Tale of Two Cities. I've been trying to read more classics- my English GCSE studies of 'Tess of D'Ubervilles' (blech) and 'Pride and Prejudice' kind of turned me off classic literature, so I'm excited to have an excuse to start back up again- Dickens was always my favorite when I was a kid, so I'm hopeful. Plus, I love books with history- have ever since I got my dusty copy of Misty of Chincoteague from my grandfather when I was about six. When I get a chance I'll post a picture for you guys and tell you how that goes. :)

The same friend also lent me American Gods by Neil Gaiman. This will be the first Gaiman book I've read, and several of my close friends are obsessed so I'm looking forward to jumping on the bandwagon. I did watch the movie version of Stardust and really enjoyed it, so again, I'm hopeful!

I also got a few e-ARCs from NetGalley:

Thanks to HarperTeen, Harlequin Teen, Candlewick Press and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt! Unfortunately my school internet doesn't let me download e-arc's to my computer but I'm hoping to get the kindle app installed onto my iPad this weekend and do it that way.

What was in your mailbox?

  2. I heard that A Long, Long Sleep was an amazing read. You're so lucky to have gotten the ARC. I haven't found many people who are reviewing it. I hope you will! :)
