Review: Linger- Maggie Stiefvater

In Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past…and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabel, who already lost her brother to the wolves…and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love–the light and the dark, the warm and the cold–in a way you will never forget.

I admit that for me, 'Shiver' was merely average—I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t going on my favorites list. 'Linger', however, is a whole different story. I really enjoyed myself while I was reading it, and I’m very excited for ‘Forever’, out in July, 2011.

It might have been the fact that there was a bit of science here and there that swayed me, but it’s more likely that Cole and Isabelle changed my mind. People have complained that Sam and Grace’s relationship is too perfect, and while I wouldn’t agree with that claim, it does have its stagnant albeit sweet moments. With Isabelle and Cole, however, there’s constant tension on every page, a little bit of brokenness and a whole lot of attitude.

One of my qualms with ‘Shiver’ was that it wrapped up a little too neatly, and I loved how that perception was turned on it’s head in this second installment. I also enjoyed Grace’s new found rebellious streak—although at times this wandered a little too close to the whiny-girl trap, it never quite fell in.

All in all, ‘Linger’ was a very satisfying sequel—and have you seen the beautiful stop motion book trailer? Youtube’s blocked in Turkey, so I can’t embed it, but the link is here.

  1. Hey! Awesome, awesome review! I agree with everything - I loved Grace's assertiveness in this one, especially when she just let her parents have it. Go Grace!
Excellent review. Too bad we all have to wait so loooong for FOREVER
